Federal Loan Forgiveness Programs

There are federal student loan forgiveness programs for different loan types with different eligibility criteria. Listed below are a few of these programs. In certain situations, you may be eligible for other types of loan forgiveness, cancellation or discharge. Learn more.


  • The Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program

    This program provides $5,000 to $17,500 in loan forgiveness to “highly qualified” mathematics, science and special education teachers. The borrower must meet all the defined criteria and be a full-time teacher for five consecutive years in a designated elementary, secondary school or educational service agency serving low-income families. Federal loans made on or after October 1, 1998 qualify for forgiveness if, at the time you received the loan, you did not have an outstanding balance on a federal student loan.   • The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program

    This program can forgive student loans for borrowers who have made 120 qualifying payments on an eligible Direct Program Loan while employed full time in certain public service professions. (Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program Loans must be consolidated with the Department of Education into a Direct Program Loan to be eligible.
